Beer-Braised Bratwurst with Caramelized Onions and Apples — A Rustic and Comforting Dish

Preparation Method

Preheat the oven
Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F).

Caramelize the onions and apples
In a large skillet, heat the butter and olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook for about 5–6 minutes until they begin to soften.

Add the apples
Stir in the sliced apples and sprinkle with the brown sugar. Cook for another 4–5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions and apples become slightly caramelized and fragrant.

Prepare the baking dish
Transfer the onion and apple mixture to a baking dish and spread it evenly to create a bed for the sausages.

Add the bratwurst
Place the bratwurst sausages on top of the onion and apple mixture.

Pour the beer
Carefully pour the beer into the baking dish around the sausages. Season lightly with salt and black pepper.

Bake
Place the dish in the oven and bake for 30–35 minutes, turning the sausages halfway through cooking. The sausages should become nicely browned and the beer should reduce into a flavorful sauce.

Serve
Serve the bratwurst hot with the caramelized onions and apples, along with crusty bread, mustard, or roasted potatoes if desired.
