1 teaspoon ground cumin

1 bay leaf

1 teaspoon turmeric (optional)

1 tablespoon tomato paste (optional but adds richness)

4 cups water or beef broth

1 small green chili or hot pepper (optional)

Juice of Β½ lemon

Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
